Primary Package Unit

Field codes IN KNPRIENH | OUT WIPRIENH | API primaryPackageUnit

Definition

This field specifies the unit of the primary packaging, meaning the smallest packaging level with a GTIN that can be sold to the end consumer.

Explanation

The primary packaging is the unit that the end consumer normally purchases in retail, often referred to as the consumer package. It has its own GTIN and represents the item’s smallest saleable level.

You may change the unit of the primary packaging as long as the package content or unit does not change. If the content or the unit of the content changes, a new GTIN is required and, in many cases, a new item must be created.

When changing the primary packaging unit, the base price unit as well as the units for secondary and tertiary packaging may also need to be updated to ensure consistency.

If the supplier only sells a larger packaging level than the primary packaging, this can be indicated by marking the primary packaging as not orderable in the field Primary Packaging Orderability Indicator.

Even if a physical barcode is missing on the product, the supplier is responsible for providing a GTIN so that the item can be correctly identified and handled throughout the supply chain.

More information is available in the section Instructions for Units.

Usage

The supplier specifies the primary packaging unit according to the applicable standard.

Finfo verifies that only valid units are used and that the same unit is not specified for multiple packaging levels for the same item.

Recipients use the information to interpret the item’s smallest sales unit and to handle ordering and presentation correctly.
